Creative bliss, one year in.

Today is the one year anniversary of starting my media productions business!!!!

Yay. :) Let’s cheer for me everyone! … Except that’s not really how this all works with the cheering and everything, let’s be honest. Why then is applause expected?

I haven’t come as far as I would have liked… but I did make some progress and that is important. When starting a business, it’s important to consider EVERYTHING… how every little detail is going to work. I have found that in the creative industry, planning is just as important as production… you want everybody to end up on the same page and prevent yourself from ending up short in the money department or  this is especially true when planning and working with your clients or investors. So plan and don’t let anybody give you the shaft.

I’ll offer a few tips for creative newbies. For creative project success in the real world, be sure to:

  • Identify the practical budget amount available…
  • Be honest about how long the project is going to take (how many man hours, and what the deadlines will look like)…
  • Identify the other areas that will need attention besides the creative…
  • Make sure all parties commit to staying true to the project manager’s creative vision/ direction…
  • Sign a contract…
  • Bring in the right talent…
  • When possible, write a script or outline for the client or investor to sign off on… before the work gets underway…
  • Be happy, you’re doing what you love!! (And if your not, what are you waiting for. Go and find it!)
